CLASSIC CAR TOURS (MK) HISTORIC CHAMPIONSHIP

Saltire Classic Rally Sunday 24th February
The event was based at the Kenmore Hotel, Kenmore, NW of Perth & used the grounds of Kenmore Castle which is undergoing a long restoration project for 9 of the 20 tests.
At this time of the year Kenmore is quiet but it comes alive with the buzz of the rally & with the event taking over the Hotel the atmosphere & social side is good.
We travelled up on Saturday but with the Forth Bridge being closed to us due to winds we had to divert via Sterling adding about 25 miles on & making a total journey of 335 miles.
Scrutineered, signed on etc Sat evening OK it was time for a meal & a short( well that was the intention) visit to the bar – Linda retired sensibly about 10.30 – I stayed to the end about 12.30 !!
With the KLMC Cortina/Imp crews absent ( I believe an untimely holiday was to blame) it was left to Joe/Mike & Linda/myself to represent the club
The day woke to a showery start but blue sky appeared & the forecast was quite good
First of the 41 entries started at 9.00 & before long we were on our way the short distance to 4 tests at the Castle.
First one was a simple short “warm up” one on tarmac & loose. Second one was really good – long & twisty gravel tracks with one very slippy junction 90 R where small trees had been laid as the track surface covered with soil & leaves – we like many went SO & had to reverse. Third one mainly tarmac with a bit of loose was around the castle itself & the fourth a blast up the tarmac entrance road with 3 straw bale chicanes – All good & enjoyable.
Short drive along the side of Loch Tay to Tests 5 & 6. Five was around buildings in a farmyard where I had brain fade & with the indecision hit a bank hard thinking I could bounce off it but had to reverse anyway – a good test but a moment of stupidity on my part . Test 6 was down a farm track with a very muddy 180 turn at the end which caused problems for many crews .
Few miles to test 7 in a wet muddy quarry with some big holes for the unwary followed by test 8 around buildings & storage areas in a contractors yard. There were some big machines & concrete blocks to hit if you got it wrong – one crew did !!
Eight tests completed & we had only done 15 miles. 10 mile Transport section to Regularity 1 – 5 miles long with 1 intermediate time control – all very straightforward – we dropped 8 & 7 secs which was reasonable.
Test 9 was at a small whisky distillery where the test on a slippy sloping car park was laid out using whisky barrels as markers !
Test 10 & 11 were around the car park of the Pitlochry Theatre where we had lunch so there was plenty of spectators to watch the crews especially at a tricky double 360 around a flower island.
Regularity 2 followed 7 miles long & taking us back towards Kenmore, 1 intermediate time control , 1 speed change, pretty straightforward – we dropped 3 & 3 which was good.
Test 12 at a caravan park on the shores of Loch Tummell consisted of a sharp drop down into the park, around the site roads & back up the hill to the finish – all gravel, fast & good.
Straight into the final Regularity, 10 miles, 1 intermediate & 1 speed change as Reg 2 – no problems all went OK we dropped 6 & 57 ?? that’s what the results showed but it was obviously wrong. This finished at the start of test 13 – unlucky for some – good test in a quarry but a bit tricky & quite a few crews got it wrong.
Back to the castle for a rerun of tests 1-4, again really enjoyable then a rerun of tests 7 & 8 before returning to the castle for “The Final Fling” Stage 20, oops no, Test 20. This consisted of Tests 1-4 all joined together & run backwards – absolutely fantastic & as the organisers had asked us to give the Hotel Manager & Assistant a ride through we got 2 extra goes – despite the extra body we improved our time each time – they were quite stunned what an old car can do !
So a really good compact event . There were a number of queries over the results which proved frustrating for the organisers/results team & in the end some (including our 57 penalty on Reg 3) were not resolved .
Noel Cochrane/Oliver McCullem in their Midget headed the provisional results but were excluded for being towed 4 miles on a road link section due to a damaged fuel pipe which gave the win to Archie?Richard Simmonds
Results showed us second overall & 1st in class . Joe/Mike finished 17th & 2nd in class
As we & a few others were staying the night after the Rally we retired to the bar where we stayed til 1.00am
