Kick Energy/Acceleration TV Junior 1000 Rally Championship

My name is Aaron McClure, I am 14 years old and live in Flookburgh. I have been a member of KLMC for a couple of years, and I’m on my way to competing in the first ever rally for the juniors in Britain . I have been waiting for this for ages, having been involved in rallying for a long time with my dad and his friends. When I was 11 I saw an advert in Motorsport News for a free test day at Rallyschool in Shropshire for kids aged 12 upwards, I pestered and pestered until my mum rang them and asked if I could go, they agreed and then I was hooked. Since then I have attended rallyschool regularly and enjoyed every minute. When it was announced last year that the MSA were going to allow us to rally from the age of 14, I got my first car. We bought a micra and the transformation started. I worked all through the summer holidays, scraping and stripping the car down to a bare shell. Dad and the crew have worked hard to help rebuild my car into the finished product. During this time I have managed to find myself a couple of sponsors, Wild Cat Marine and

K J Gibbons who have helped to support me.

Last year I joined the F1000 club, as they were the organisers of the Junior Championship. In order to be able to compete I have had to complete 3 production car auto tests. The first one I did was at Bolton Services, I had to have a passenger who had taken part in auto tests so I asked Gary Rigg to sit in with me. We had a good day and managed to finish the event with only 3 penalties. The next one I did was with Morecambe Car Club, again Gary sat in with me and we had a fantastic time. We managed to complete the tests and I got the required signature on my form. The final autotest I did was organised by the F1000 club as one had to be run by them so they could see me drive. This was at Trawsfynydd , on 29 December, we set off at 5am just Mum and me. The F1000 gave me a ‘navigator’, what they didn’t tell me was that he had never done it before! We had a really great time but we had to keep stopping in the middle of the tests so he could find his way. We managed to finish the event and get the required signature but enough said about that!

I have also been to Phil Price Rallyschool to take the BARS test and have sent away for my licence. The MSA are giving us our first licence free so that’s a good bonus. We are not allowed to hold our own licences, these are being kept by the F1000 club. The final test I had to take was at Rallyschool in Shropshire, it’s was F1000 Junior Championship Entry Test, which is loads harder than the BARS test We had to revise the blue book and sit a written test, we had to score at least 13 out of 17. No parents were allowed into the test, and we needed full marks on the safety section. The next part of the test was to drive around the track with John Goff in with us to prove that we could drive safely, change gears and be aware of the surface changes that might happen on a stage. I was really nervous and although I passed the written part of the test I failed the driving part. It was just one of those bad days, couldn’t really say what went wrong but it did. I went back two days later and did it all again and thankfully I passed. It was really nerve wracking and I was glad to get it over and done.

Anyway I have placed my entry for first event, Roskirk Stages, 8 March 2009 . My navigator is Trevor Smith so I’m hoping to pick up some tips on driving from him. We are trying to get a days testing in before then, but as I can’t legally drive on the road it is sometimes quite difficult to get the required practice.

I would like to thank all the people who have helped me to reach this stage, either by donating their time, materials or parts.
