Championship Standings after round 3
Bulletin Four
Hello and welcome to the fourth Bulletin of the 2008 Championship.
The sixth round of the Championship was the Clitheronian, starting from Darwen
Services and using classic territory over the Trough of Bowland before heading north to
the demanding fell roads of Barbondale and Kingsdale.
It was an excellent night for some TNC crews, with Tony Harrison/Martyn Taylor
storming to 2nd Overall after what the navigator described as “The best Plot & Bash
event I’ve done for as long as I can remember.” Mal Grisdale/Bob Hargreaves had a
good run to 7th, while Jon Wood/Paul Bosdet teamed up to take 11th in the mini Mini.
Meanwhile a long lay off for Chris Williams didn’t cause too much of an issue as he
navigated Pete Jagger to 14th.
However the rest didn’t fare too well, with Alex Willan/Paul Taylor, Pete Tyson/Neil
Harrison, Terry Martin/Jerry Hettrick, Paul Brereton/Ron Turner and Andrew
Brereton/Steve Hartley all retiring.
All of this has really tightened up the Championship tables, especially with Ady
Green/Kevin Wilson pulling in 15 points apiece for marshalling. With the cancellation of
the Countdown and the Lonsdale Belt we really need to use our Reserve event, which
means once again the Beaver will close the curtain on the Championship. That will
make 7 rounds, so it will be best 5 scores to count.
A quick look at the tables show that it is definitely all to play for; the top five Drivers and
Navigators could all still take the spoils. I’d really like to see you all travelling across to
Hull for the showdown on the 29th/30th November, as I’ve always said the Beaver is an
excellent event and well worth the journey.

Bulletin Three
Hello and welcome to the third Bulletin of the 2008 Championship.
The fourth round of the Championship saw the return of the Morecambe Rally, an event
thoroughly enjoyed by anyone who likes Whites! A decent entry descended upon the
Punch Bowl in Low Bentham on a perfect evening for marshals, I was even wearing
shorts! In all 13 TNC competitors took the start with local crews Pete Tyson/Neil
Harrison, Alex Willan/Ali Proctor and Tony Harrison/Martyn Taylor all looking for good
results to bump them up the tables.
A week of good weather meant the lanes, and more importantly the Whites, were in
excellent condition, so the short uphill stretch on the long “Wray White” which caught out
so many in 2006 posed no problem to crews. Amazingly all our TNC crews made the
finish, with some excellent results overall.
Tyson/Harrison took top points in 2nd Overall, just a handful of seconds behind winners
Steve Head/Graham Raeburn. I don’t know how that Mini copes with those Whites on
road tyres..... A whisker behind came the first time pairing of Alex Willan/Ali Proctor in
3rd Overall, a return to form bearing a very welcome result. Tony Harrison/Martyn Taylor
survived punctures to come home 3rd TNC crew and 5th Overall, closely followed by Mal
Grisdale/Bob Hargreaves. Having a less fortunate event were Terry Martin/Paul Taylor,
who lost several minutes with fuel pump problems shortly after the start. They recovered
to 5th TNC and 8th Overall. Meanwhile Paul Brereton/Ron Turner and Andy
Long/Matthew Field continued their personal French/Italian battle finishing in 10th and
13th respectively.
Post-event comments were very favourable, despite much of the event being cleanable,
so hopefully the Morecambe Rally will run again next year.
A fortnight later came the Devils Own, with a slightly different format for the
Championship. A day of Tests preceded a Regularity based night section, and although
the event attracted a full 60 car entry only ten TNC competitors were present, and two of
them were on the wrong side of the car!
What can I say about the event? Well, it was wet. Then it got wetter. And then it really
rained.......
Thankfully the marshals round these parts are tough and we managed to man most
controls day and night. Those guys are the real heroes, all the more reason to say
“Thanks for marshalling” without fail.
The day section passed by relatively smoothly, but by night the weather was torrential
and unrelentless, and one by one retirements came. Alex Willan/Tom Vipond lost their
tripmeter (not literally) after just one Regularity so decided upon an early night, while
Paul Brereton/Ron Turner drowned out their 306 and, with no hope of getting going
again, hitched a tow home from Andrew Brereton/Andy Long.
By contrast the mighty Minis of Pete Tyson/Neil Harrison and Jon Wood/Paul Taylor
were unstoppable, with Tyson/Harrison winning the event outright for the second year
running and Wood/Taylor clawing back lost time to take a credible 7th Overall. Those
Minis must float across the puddles and floods! (well, maybe Jon & Paul’s.......)
So several changes tothe Championship tables have occurred. With long time leaders
Ady Green and Kevin Wilson missing the last two rounds we have new names at the
top, but its looking very tight with three points separating the top two Navigators and a tie
in the Drivers.
After the last Bulletin I have decided to keep the rounds as they are, which will mean 9
rounds/7 scores if the Westmorland runs in some form or 8 rounds/6 scores if it
doesn’t.
The next round is the Clitheronian on the 27th/28th September. Regs are now available
online at: http://www.cdmconline.com/mycustompage0023.htm
The event will be on maps 97,98,102 & 103, although you shouldn't need 98 as the
sections of the route on this map will be provided on colour printed hand-outs. The
format is mostly straightforward plot & bash (as per last year for those of you that did it)
with some sections on colour printed map hand-outs.
Just one week later comes the Countdown on a new date of the 4th/5th October. Regs
will be out via e-mail VERY soon, and CofC Jerry Hettrick has advised me that the route
instructions ARE easier than last year - “we listen and respond to competitors
comments - you are our customer!”.
In the meantime I wish you all well.

Team Northern Construction Road Rally Championship
Introduction
Welcome to the Team Northern Construction Road Rally Championship 2008,
brought to you by Kirkby Lonsdale Motor Club and Kirkby Lonsdale Cars.
2008 sees the second running of the Championship and we are very pleased to
have Team Northern Construction Ltd on board once again.
There will be 10 rounds across the north of England, giving a wide variety of
roads to test the car and driver with different types of plotting/formats to test the
navigators. The award winners at the end of the year should be those who are
successful on all styles of event, not just ‘specialists’ in one particular area.
All the rounds are generally around 100 and 160 miles in length, running from
Midnight to 6am, depending on the time of year. Entry fees are around the £60
mark, usually including breakfast for both crew members at the finish.
Knowing that many new crews are put off when they come across rough roads
or difficult navigation, a brief summary of each event follows these regulations
so you know what to expect. In addition, individual event regulations should give
an honest picture of the format of the event, including details of the route, for
example how many Whites (non-surfaced roads/tracks) are to be used, the type
of navigation to expect and a basic schedule for pre-event scrutineering/noise
test and the rally itself.
Following the supplementary regulations you should find a registration form. For
just a fiver you can register in the drivers or navigators (or both!)
championships, you will receive Bulletins featuring reports on events, the latest
championship positions, details of forthcoming events and, of course, the
chance to lap up the glory at the awards do at the end of the season!
If you need any more information or have any questions please feel free to
contact me and I’ll do my best to help out. In the meantime good luck getting
those cars and maps ready, and I look forward to seeing you out and about in
2008.
